Yahoo will close its last office in the Middle East next year as it looks to ‘streamline’ its business, the company has announced.
The 50 Dubai-based members of staff have been notified of the decision to close the office in Dubai Internet City by the end of April 2016, which follows the closure of offices in Jordan and Egypt in 2014.
Yahoo entered the Middle East through the acquisition of Jordan-based Maktoob in 2009 and operates Arabic and English news sites for the region, as well as sub-sites covering topics such as beauty & heath, celebrities and sport.
A Yahoo spokesperson said in a statement the company would continue to offer its regional services to customers in Arabic and English.
“We informed our Dubai-based employees that we’ve made the difficult decision to close the office by the end of April as a part of Yahoo’s effort to streamline our business and set the company up for long-term growth. We are incredibly grateful for our employees’ hard work and contributions. We will continue to provide our suite of consumer services in Arabic and English and our advertising inventory through Yahoo marketplaces and other advertising exchanges.”
