UAE's Radio 1 and Radio 2 Close Down

English language radio stations Radio 1 and Radio 2 have been closed down with the expected loss of around 30 jobs.
The stations were managed by Gulf News Broadcasting on behalf of Abu Dhabi Media, which owns the licences and broadcast frequencies.
“Gulf News Broadcasting LLC is today announcing that with immediate effect it will no longer be managing the Radio One & Radio Two stations,” the company said in a statement. “This is as a result of unforeseen circumstances, which are beyond the control of Gulf News Broadcasting LLC.”
Gulf Business magazine reports that the licences for the stations have been ‘withdrawn’ by Abu Dhabi Media.
The stations’ online streaming service has also gone off-air, while social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook have been taken down.
“Gulf News Broadcasting LLC would like to thank all its employees, advertising partners and supporters for their contribution, effort and commitment for the successful management of Radio One & Radio Two stations over the last 10 years,” the statement added. “No further comment will be made.”
Both stations went off-air last week and had been playing a loop of music without presenters, which Gulf News Broadcasting had put down to a ‘technical issue'.
“Gulf News Broadcasting apologises for any inconvenience caused due to the interrupted service to Radio 1 and Radio 2 stations,” a statement issued last Wednesday said. “This is due to a transmission issue which we anticipate will be resolved shortly.”
