The rise of social media has provided radio stations with a new means of interacting with their audiences and attracting new listeners. We take a look at the Top 30 radio stations in the Middle East and North Africa in terms of Twitter followers and Facebook likes.
104.2 Nile FM and Nogoum FM 100.6, which became Egypt's first independent radio stations when they launched in 2003, occupy first and fifth places respectively in terms of Twitter followers, with radio stations from North Africa occupying six of the top 10 places.
MBC FM leads in the Gulf, with Kuwait's Marina FM, MBC stablemate Panorama FM and Saudi Arabia's U FM also making the Top 10:
Lebanese radio stations occupy two of the top three places in our Top 30 when it comes to Facebook. Virgin Radio Lebanon is the clear leader with almost 14 million Likes, while Radio One is in third place with close to four million. Egypt's Nogoum FM 100.6 is in second place, with radio stations from North Africa again occupying six of the top 10 spots:
