Lucky Generation Gamers is a group of Kuwaiti gaming enthusiasts whose Arabic podcasts and videos featuring gaming news and opinions on the games they are currently playing have helped galvanise the region’s gaming community. MediaSource spoke with Hamad Al-Homaidah about the success of the group’s blog and the status of the gaming scene in the Middle East.
What inspired you to start the blog?
We are a group of video game enthusiasts who have come together to express our common interest in the gaming industry through unique shows and services, audio and video content, as well as live streaming and commentary. The Lucky Generation Gamers are Abdullah Boushehri, Hussain Al-Dulaimi, Hamad Al-Homaidah, Yaqoub Al-Hussaini, Ali Al-Dehaish and Adel Baroody.
Why ‘Lucky Generation’?
We feel our generation has experienced the major and most important events in gaming and witnessed much of its evolution from the simplistic forms of the early days to the complexities of today's games.
What’s the gaming scene like in the Middle East?
The scene is growing very rapidly, especially with successful events like Middle East Film & Comic Con and GAMES in Dubai. Sadly, most gamers in the region lack awareness of gaming events, and official outlets providing these events think the community is not large enough to engage. Providing awareness via our podcast, Google+ community page, and various channels helps connect the two dependent parties. Our community page is open for anyone to post. This decentralises the information gathered and we can learn more from our community which helps cover a wider range of events.
How do you measure the success of your blog?
Our podcast is very successful judging by the number of downloads and community interaction - we are on the rise but, similar to the local gaming scene, we believe we have the potential to reach out to a wider audience through our different content, whether in audio or video format.
How important is it for you to interact with your followers?
Engaging with our audience is a huge part of our shows and blog, especially the podcast. We believe it is very important to have two-way communication between us. It's important to understand and learn more about them and their opinions because, in the end, we are the gaming community and we want all of our voices to be heard.
How do you work with marketers and PRs?
Most of our work with PRs includes sharing news and providing us with review codes for upcoming games, which are later discussed in our podcast and shows. We still believe we are lacking more interaction with official companies. We hope to see more PR and outlet interaction as the community is dependent on that and demands more, especially when contrasted with the levels of interaction in the West.
What can marketers do better?
We would love to see more events, tournaments and expos that cater for Middle Eastern gamers. These events can help the community gather together, get to know each other, and offer opportunities for the medium to go mainstream in our region.
